Princess Leia tells a tale of Obi-Wan Kenobi in 1979′s issue 24 of Marvel’s Star Wars comics.
This is very interesting to me, because I had been under the impression that at that early stage the Empire was meant to be significantly older than it later became, but apparently even by 1979 it had come into being in Kenobi’s lifetime.

I remember this comic, a flashback to Obi-Wan’s adventuring days, very clearly, because I thought Obi Wan’s black with boots Jedi outfit was awesome, slick and secret agent cool. When Luke showed up in Return of the Jedi and wore unadorned, no-frills black too, I assumed that was the uniform of Jedi Knights.

I never cared for the reveal that the Jedi wore simplified robes, which was a bizarre use of the imagery of the original trilogy - Ben Kenobi wore a robe because he lived in the desert, not because it was uniform of Jedi Knights. Uncle Owen, as RedLetterMedia pointed out, also wore a robe.
One of the most interesting things about early, pre-Empire Strikes Back Star Wars material was the idea that the Emperor was merely a figurehead (and according to one source, possibly a child), a roi fainéant, and it was the military bureaucracy that actually had power and ruled the Empire. If you watch the first Star Wars, it’s easy to see where you could get this idea.
There were many surprising reveals that came in at Empire Strikes Back that shocked people. For instance, many found it surprising when we learned the Emperor knew about the Force and was some kind of sorcerer…a detail that is shocking considering the Empire’s emphasis on military power, machines, troops, and superweapons. Also, many people were surprised to find that the Millennium Falcon really was a “hot ship,” it wasn’t just a junker Han Solo bragged about.
